Abstract: A historical review of the development of flat-panel displays shows examples of relatively steady evolution through the interplay of scientific breakthroughs, market forces and corporate policies but also cases where failed ideas sprout again in response to new technical conditions or a new generation of venture capitalists. Biography: Dr. Kmetz was educated at Yale University. He has been active in display research since 1970, working for five years each at Texas Instruments in Dallas and Brown Boveri in Switzerland before joining Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, where he completed twenty years as Technical Manager and Distinguished Member of Technical Staff. His principal scientific contributions relate to alignment, addressing and characterization of LCDs; he also has worked on CCDs and ferroelectrics and has managed developments of AMLCDs and fiber optics. In 1999 he transferred to the Intellectual Property Division, first within Lucent Technologies and then with the spin-off Agere Systems, from which he recently retired. He remains active as a consultant on display technology and intellectual property. Author of numerous technical papers and coeditor of the book Nonemissive Electrooptic Displays, Dr. Kmetz holds 16 US and 45 foreign patents. He is a Fellow of the Society for Information Display and Senior Member of IEEE. After serving as both lecturer and organizer of SID Seminars, program committee member and chair of the SID Symposium and IDRC, he was elected president of SID for 2002 and 2003. He is currently a member of the Honors and Awards Committee and an associate editor of the Journal of the SID. |
