Trapping light with liquid crystals in optical fibers: devices and applications Invited Speaker: Dr. Thomas Tanggaard Alkeskjold Department of Communications, Optics and Materials Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
Abstract: This talk will review the recent progress in liquid crystal photonic bandgap fiber devices, which allow for thermally, electrically, and all-optically tuning of a range of in-fiber components such as spectral filters, polarizers, polarization controllers and light choppers with millisecond response time. I will also present a novel way of integrating these devices in a silicon / gold microstructure, which gives full control of the LC properties and opens up for polarization manipulating components having azimuthal control of the optical axis as well as switchable and tunable properties.
Biography: Thomas T. Alkeskjold obtained his M.Sc.E degree (2002) in electronics and optics from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Ph.D. degree (2005) in optics also from DTU. Thomas has worked with photonic crystal fiber related technology for the last 5 years and has previously been employed at Tellabs Denmark, where he worked on design and test of transceivers, cross connects, and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for WDM communication systems. Dr. Alkeskjold is currently working as a research scientist at the Department of Communications, Optics and Materials (COM•DTU) at DTU. Dr. Alkeskjold has authored and co-authored more than 40 papers, and holds 4 patent applications. He received the "Young Elite Researchers" award by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, the UBVA author award, and "Director Peter Gorm-Petersens" memorial trust.
